Water charges are an ever increasing cost for businesses in Ireland. Water charges are imposed by local authorities around Ireland. Commercial water charges are levied on all businesses in the country and must be paid to the local authority. Domestic water charges will be introduced from 2011 for all households supplied by local authority water schemes.
Water Meter Systems
The Minister announced that preparations are underway to introduce a new water meter system in homes. When introduced, water charges will be based on water consumption above a free threshold. These charges will finance the provision of local services by local authorities.
Water charges are used specifically to maintain and improve water and waste water systems. It is likely that domestic water charges will be reintroduced in the next budget.
- Up to 6,000 jobs will be created with the introduction of household water meters.
- €600m will be invested in rolling out domestic water meters over the next three years

Furthermore, the allocation of €300 million to fund the replacement of water mains (Source: John Gormley January 2010) results in the combined value of the water mains replacement and water metering market totaling €600 million over the next three years.
